In the last six months, IWPR’s radio programme Facing Justice produced jointly with Radio Free Europe, RFE, has continued to bring important issues to the attention of the region.

Significantly, politicians in the Bosnian Serb entity Republika Srpska, RS, spoke of the importance of covering war crimes trials in a balanced way, as Facing Justice does.

“Facing Justice provides a much needed dialogue on sensitive issues,” said Jovan Spajic, head of the RS department for cooperation with the Hague tribunal, in May.

“I don’t think ignoring our recent past is good for anyone,” said Spajic. “But most of all, we need these subjects to be approached objectively and in a non-partisan way, because media can have a very dangerous role once they start taking sides.

“All programmes dealing with justice and reconciliation – including Facing Justice – are welcome and absolutely necessary.”
